The Kansas Jayhawks are a premier NCAA basketball team that has been involved with top teams since the beginning of basketball. Winning National Championships in 1922, 1923, 1952, 1988, and 2008 the Jayhawks have won many times. Generation to generation they have had very talented players. From players like Adolph Rupp to Wilt Chamberlain to Paul Pierce to Thomas Robinson to name some greats to walk through Allen Fieldhouse. Great players come and go in Kansas but this year is different. Kansas is known for having great teams and lots of depth, in this 2011-2012 season it is very different than a usual Kansas team.
Bill Self usually puts together amazing squads but this is a down year. With 2 top recruits ruled ineligible for the entire year, Bill has little to no depth on his bench. With powerhouse Thomas Robinson and veteran point guard Tyshawn Taylor they have almost no players to work with. Some players that chip in a little bit are Conner Teahan, Elijah Johnson, and Jeff Withey. Thomas Robinson, potential player of the year candidate is working with almost no one. Kansas having the record of 18-3 is way more than anyone expected from this caliber of a team. Kansas has lost to Kentucky and Duke which are also amazing programs for collegiate basketball. Their third lost came against Davidson, who is a weak opponent, Kansas could not make a shot the entire game. While Davidson came out hot, they attacked Kansas’s weaknesses and pulled out a win. Now let’s not forget the 18 wins that Kansas has under their belt this season. Beating #2 ranked Ohio State, #3 ranked Baylor, and #22 Kansas State. Kansas still with a tough schedule having to play @Missouri, @Baylor, @Kansas State, and @Iowa State. Teams as good as these teams will give Kansas a run for their money but I believe they can win these games. Using teamwork and toughness, they can win tough games on the road. If everyone contributes on the team Kansas is an unstoppable team that can contend to win a National title.
Even though production is down from Kansas, they are still a contender. With their leaders like Thomas Robinson and Tyshawn Taylor the Jayhawks are a very good team. A team that is well coached and has good talent can make it far in the postseason. Which I believe the Jayhawks can do, but they will need to work on many things. But one thing for sure is that I will be rooting for the Jayhawks every step of the way.
