Author's Note: I wrote this piece because it was an inspiration of courage, determination, and honor which everyone could use more of in their life.
Giving up your life is something you can’t do or shouldn’t do. The hardships you go through, being made fun of for something you cannot control, and your new surroundings that you have to understand. You wouldn’t want anything to change in your life but unfortunately it does. Different places, different people, and different surroundings. William Durbin makes you picture this in his book The Winter War. This book shows the courage of young boys and girls fighting for things they love, while they learn life lessons of growing up as a whole person. They have nothing to lose because everything they know is basically gone. Living without something or someone hurts, but you have to push through the pain and move on with your life.
Pretending your some you aren’t; a lot of people do it but why? Is it because you want to fit in with the rest of your friends? Or because they want attention? Either way you want to be something you aren’t. Sure, you will try and keep telling yourself that you want to be something else then you are but it isn’t that simple. In this story a girl named Kaari wants to help fight the front lines of the war between Finland and Russia. Her family was killed, she wanted to fight back, she used her brother’s name and went out to the front lines using the name Karl. To me, that shows extreme courage. Usually girls want to sit home, talk, and paint there nails instead of working to actually achieve something that would help make the world a better place. Now not all girls are like that but most girls would rather not put effort into things that help us survive. Sometimes you pretend for a good reason, but most of the time you pretend because you want to be cool and fit in with everyone else. Well, maybe you should think about everyone else before doing something you will regret in the long run.
Losing things in your life is probably the worse feeling you have as a human being. Loved ones that are lost because they age, family friends or someone you are very close to. You lose them because of silly things like war, an accident that should never have happened, or someone breaking the law and you just happened to be there. No matter how anyone dies you would be sad, people use their emotions to show they are sad and in a place that is very bad. In this story, everyone loses someone or something they love. Children living without mothers or fathers. Wives waiting for their husbands to return from the dreaded war that has taken the lives of so many. The main character Marko was trying to help his city by alerting everyone about bombings with his best friend Johan. Johan ended up being killed in the Russian bombings. If I lost my best friend to something like that, I would have very painful thoughts. Why did this happen to him, not me? Why would anyone want to do this to someone? I know I have had thoughts like this when I have lost someone close to me. Fighting through this pain is the worse though. It is something we have to do though to move on from people in our lives. Those are the things you need to do so you can move on in your life from something or someone you love.
Growing up is something everyone does. It could be when you are a young teenager, a young adult, or even an adult. Either way we all mature in our lives. Some are forced to mature with certain situations they have to go through. Others however, are nurtured and don’t have to do things on their own. The children and teenagers in this book are forced to make very big decisions which is helping them mature along the way. Working non-stop to help support their families or their country. People don’t understand this when they see it happening, life has changed a lot from the early 1900’s to the present day in 2012. Children and teenagers now with cell phones, iPod’s, laptops, video game systems, or any other part of technology. Back then they worked non stop to achieve something that they needed to get done. Society has changed a lot, but that doesn’t mean we have to change it. We can use our new developed technology and hard work to create things that would help everyone in this world. I know I could do this because I do take advantage of the technology that we have and I could put more effort in everything that I do in my life. We all know that being a human is growing up and making your own decisions. If you are making an effort to do that as an entire person then you are maturing into a responsible adult.
Courage, determination, and honor. All of these things this book taught me, William Durbin made me really open my eyes with his book The Winter War. Courage is proven by children and teenagers want to make a difference to everyone that their lives involve. They would do virtually anything to help people they love, and that takes an enormous amount of courage. Determination is shown a lot in this book because there are a lot of heroic acts and wanting to get things done for a purpose. Honor is shown by defending for your country and for the loved ones you want to go home and see. Everyone that has been in a complicated situation knows that if you want to return to your family and loved ones you will need to show honor to your families name and your country. This book shows the courage of young boys and girls fighting for things they love, while they learn life lessons of growing up as a whole person. The Winter War inspires me to show courage, determination, and honor in myself and to prove myself as a whole person. It will give you an interesting point of view on life after you read the live lessons in this book, and you will be happy to learn them.
